Position reports to: Roadmaster

Position Purpose:

In keeping with the mission of Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, the track laborer will assist the Roadmaster with the maintenance of track infrastructure, including construction, inspection and repair of track and other railroad property/facilities, equipment operation and maintenance, and travel and work within assigned area.

Essential Duties: The track laborer is required to:

Assist in the repair and rebuilding of track, railbed, and track structures.
Lift a minimum of 60 pounds.
Cut and clear brush, trees, and vegetation.
Clean right-of-way of litter and debris.
Communicate effectively with the roadmaster, and other railroad managers and staff.
Operate hand tools, electric tools, gas powered tools, and hydraulic tools.
Work in all weather conditions.
Work around and/or operate heavy machinery.
On occasion, work as part of train operations or shop crew on an as needed basis.
Attend annual safety training and pass examinations.
Respond to urgent track needs on an on-call basis including, but not limited to overtime, nights, and holidays.

Qualifications:

At least 18 years of age.
Able to transport self to and from work.
Comfortable working around heavy equipment.
Flexibility and ability to adapt to unexpected circumstances.
Willingness to work during weekends and around the holiday season.
Be punctual. Track department employees are required to report ready for work at the scheduled time.
Possess valid state-issued driver’s license.
Able to work under federal, state, and company safety rules.

Experience

Prior work with heavy equipment, hydraulic tools, and/or construction preferred, but not required.
Prior railroad experience preferred, but not required.

Working Conditions:

Extreme all-weather conditions
Walk and perform work on uneven surfaces
Perform work on elevated track structures, using required fall protection equipment.
Safety sensitive work environment
Loud noise and fumes
Work on and around heavy/moving machinery
